The government’s ban on Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in cigarette manufacturing came into effect, shutting the doors permanently on overseas companies.

The department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP) in the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, which had mooted the ban, issued a notification saying FDI in manufacturing of cigars, cheroots, cigarillos and cigarettes has come into force with immediate effect.

The decision to ban FDI in cigarette manufacturing was taken by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) at its meeting held on April 8. After the meeting, Home minister P Chidambaram had told reporters; ‘FDI will be prohibited in the manufacture of cigarettes, whether it is for domestic consumption…or for exports.’ The ban would also be applicable in the tax-free special economic zones, he had stated.

The decision notified leaves the cigarette market wide open for Indian manufacturers such as ITC, which has about three-fourths of market share in this segment.

In its continued mission of providing to retailers a “total tobacco” approach, R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. and American Snuff Co., the largest operating companies of Reynolds American Inc., are focusing on their other tobacco products (OTP) offering with the launch of a new moist smokeless tobacco product, new packaging and more, company executives recently told CSNews Online.

In the first quarter 2010, Reynolds American’s American Snuff Co., formerly known as Conwood Corp., launched Grizzly 1900 long cut, a natural moist smokeless tobacco (MST) product that features more dark fired tobacco, providing a more robust tobacco flavor, according to company officials. The premium-tasting product is value-priced and available nationally. It is aimed at adult MST consumers looking for a product with a bolder, more traditional tobacco taste, officials said.

The “1900″ is a nod toward the founding year of American Snuff Co. The original factory is also portrayed on the package.

Meanwhile, all Grizzly and Kodiak brand MST saw a packaging update in the first quarter to embossed metal lids. The new lids were rolled out for the Grizzly brand in February and the Kodiak brand in March, officials noted, adding the packaging is a cue towards to products’ premium quality.

And R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. (RJRT) is “pleased” with the progress of its Camel Snus — a smokeless, spitless tobacco product available nationwide, according to company officials, who noted Camel Snus currently represents 90 percent of the snus market in the U.S. And for the first quarter of 2010, Camel Snus had a 0.2 share of market on a cigarette-equivalent basis, according to the company’s first quarter earnings report.

In addition, RJRT continues to gain learnings from its pilot of its dissolvable line of products in three U.S. test markets. The Camel Sticks, Strips and Orbs are currently available in Columbus, Ohio, Indianapolis and Portland, Ore.

Moving forward, RJRT will be “deliberate” in its expansion, similar to what the company did when testing its Camel Snus product, officials told CSNews Online. The company will gain learnings and feedback from both adult tobacco consumers and retailers, as well as continue to educate adult tobacco consumers and increase awareness by working with its retail partners.

The emphasis RJRT is putting on its alternative tobacco products aligns with its mission to be what officials call a “total tobacco company,” and help keep the tobacco category a viable one for convenience retailers, officials said.

The word “cigar’’ is believed to have come from “sikar,’’ the Mayan-Indian word for smoking.

Christopher Columbus arrived in Cuba to find the natives smoking large, tube-shaped constructions of plant leaves filled with tobacco. He smartly took some back to Spain.

Israel Putnam, who would become a general in the Revolutionary War, brought cigars to his home in Connecticut from Cuba in 1762, launching the industry in the Connecticut Valley.

In 1880, 271 Massachusetts companies made more than 50 million cigars, according to the Tobacco Institute.

In 1975, Pink Floyd released the song “Have a Cigar,’’ a cynical ode to greedy record execs.

In 1983, Boston’s Ritz-Carlton held a black-tie cigar dinner. By 1994, more than 2,000 such evenings were reportedly held across the country.

In 1993, the European Journal of Cancer reported that the risk of dying from oral cancer is four to 10 times greater for cigar smokers than nonsmokers.

The most scandalous moment in cigar history: Monica Lewinsky testified in 1998 that she and President Clinton once used a cigar for sex.

In 1996, Demi Moore held a smoking cigar on the cover of Cigar Aficionado magazine. The headline: “Demi Moore’s Secret Passion.’’

2006 The most expensive cigar in the world at the time came on the market. The Cohiba Behike ran $440 apiece and $18,860 for a box, if you could find one. Only 4,000 were made.

2009 A British tabloid quoted an unnamed source who claims hunky soccer star David Beckham enjoys pricey stogies. Bad news, given that Beckham has been photographed using an asthma inhaler.

2010 Alejandro Robaina, a legend in the Cuban cigar business, died last week at 91. He smoked cigars until the end, according to the Associated Press.

New dissolvable nicotine pellets introduced by tobacco company R.J.Reynolds in 2009 may, according to reports, lead to accidental nicotine poisoning. The beloved nicotine for which we smokers ‘gasp for’ is in its pure form highly fatal. A single drop touching the skin is enough to kill. Yet we ignore all the health warnings, our hospitalised friends and family members at the hands of the habit, and continue to puff away that little stick of poison. Add that to the formaldehyde and other nasties contained in the cigarette paper, then even with a filter we don’t stand a chance. So measures were taken to help us kick the detrimental habit. We saw Nicorette gum, electronic cigarettes, hand gel and patches. Now to compete with the anti-nicotine market the pro-nicotine markets have given us a way to avoid the smoking ban and carry on killing ourselves.

The nicotine pellet, the Camel Orb, the Camel Strip or whichever name you decide to opt for they are all another dose of nicotine. The dissolvable smokers’ sweetie goes against all the efforts of Nicorette and brings us an anti-anti-nicotine alternative. Many smokers complain of not being able to light up well, now you don’t have to. This means that even those of us who have sadly seen the nasty side effects of the cigarette can still enjoy nicotine in 1mg, 0.6mg or a whopping 3.1mg portion. You would think that being nicotine we smokers would enjoy this little treat. Oh no, the dissolvable death wish follows in the steps of Nicolette and is flavouring the pellets and strips with cinnamon or mint. I am a smoker myself but i honestly believe this is wrong, for all of us who want to stop and have found the smoking ban a great help towards doing so…. now can still get our hourly fix of the drug even where smoking isn’t an option!
Smokers will only stop smoking if they want to stop. A lot of the time they do so because of fears for their health. Although when the health problems are not as visible we may be slowly killing ourselves without knowing, and that just isn’t fair! I for one find it a lot easier to go without a cigarette when i am either busy or in a place where smoking is not allowed. This new idea stops you from making excuses to go and have a cigarette. So how will we enjoy this? This i can also see encouraging a new generation of ‘wannabe smokers’ who ingest the nicotine but don’t actually want to try smoking, the problem here is they are still taking in the nicotine! That’s the whole point, i doubt we would be so desperate to smoke grass cuttings, no it’s the nicotine we crave. This poses many a problem, a fair amount of children could hide the habit from their parents, resulting in their parent being clueless as to why they are ill. Fair enough, many already hide the fact they are smoking, but at least with cigarettes there are tell tale signs! As for the pellet, i cannot see anything that would give it away.

In the year 2007, poison centres were inundated with calls as children as young as four had fallen ill with nicotine poisoning! After having as little as 1mg of nicotine, a child is not to know that what we have in our handbags is not a sweetie, it looks like a sweetie to them. Overall, a massive 6,724 cases were reported in that year alone! Tobacco and nicotine are dangerous, i may smoke but at least i know the consequences of my actions before i try to defy death.

The Tobacco Control Research Program has warned of the dangers of the sweetie with a deadly secret. Professor Gregory Connolly, who is director of the Harvard School of Public Health program, has said; “to make it look like a piece of candy is recklessly playing with the health of children”. The fact that the product is dangerous is also supported by the Food and Drug Control Agency who, just as I do, believe it could easily lead to addiction amongst the young. So before you go out and get your own pellets think about if you actually need them or whether you can go without a fag that whole hour during your meeting.

In the recent “point-counterpoint” debate, City Editor Steve Stockmar’s “pro” marijuana legalization position based on facts makes eminent sense while Courier Editor Ben Hansen’s “con” anecdotal fantasies argument lacks substance.

In addition to Mr. Stockmar’s argument, according to past published FBI Uniform Crime Statistics, alcohol and tobacco account for “more health and social problems than all other drugs combined” and marijuana doesn’t even count as a problem except that it’s illegal.

Current pot laws benefit only drug dealers, the liquor industry and countless government agencies including law enforcement’s failed “War on Drugs” that profit from the status quo. This “default” position continues to squander billions of tax dollars and unjustly criminalizes individuals with an indefensible double standard: Alcohol and tobacco are legal products which adults may choose to use or reject. The same rules and standards of free choice should also apply to marijuana.

Various drugs have always been relatively easy for young people to obtain despite laws prohibiting usage and age restrictions. The same situation also already exists with marijuana, legal or not, so a realistic and comprehensive educational effort (not hysteria) in homes and schools is essential.

“Reefer madness” and assorted “gateway” and slippery slope arguments are no more objectively valid than current preemptive and unjustly disproportionate and punitive anti-pot laws are deserving of respect.

Governor Charlie Crist has proclaimed March 21 through March 28 as Tobacco Free Florida Week to promote the Florida Quitline and local cessation services while raising awareness of the impact of secondhand smoke among at-risk populations.

During the week, Floridians will be encouraged to recommend friends and loved ones to contact the Florida Quitline for help in overcoming their addition.

“Tobacco Free Florida Week is a statewide call to action that is essential in spreading the word about the dangers of secondhand smoke,” said Kim Berfield, Deputy Secretary of the Florida Department of Health.

Statistics from The Florida Bureau of Tobacco Prevention shine light on the prevalence of tobacco usage within Holmes County. Survey results show that 62.7 percent of county middle school students and 62.1 percent of county high school students confirmed exposure to secondhand smoke. In 2008, 21.4 percent of mothers reported smoking during their pregnancy and current estimates suggest that there has been no significant decline in these percentages.

Did you get a H1N1 flu shot? You can thank unhatched chicken eggs for that. But a new venture dubbed Project GreenVax aims to take animals completely out of the equation by making vaccines with tobacco plants.

In traditional influenza vaccine production, scientists inject the virus into fluid surrounding a chicken embryo. After many days of incubation, the eggs are opened and the virus is removed and purified to make a vaccine. It’s a slow process–it takes two weeks to make an egg-based vaccine. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services estimates it would take a whopping 900 million eggs to make 300 million doses of vaccine.

Enter Project GreenVax, a venture spearheaded by the Texas Plant-Expressed Vaccine Consortium that plans to use plants instead of eggs to make high-yield, low-cost influenza vaccines. The venture has received $61 million in funding from the TPVC and DARPA for its approach, which involves infecting tobacco plant leaves with a virus, grinding up the leaves, and separating the antigens.

GreenVax is beginning construction next week on its 13,500-square-meter facility at the Texas A&M Health Science Center in Bryant, Texas. When completed in approximately 8 weeks, the prefab facility will house nine modular pods to grow tobacco plants and perform research.

There’s still plenty of work to be done before we start getting injected with plant-based vaccines. FDA rules for the vaccines are still a bit dicey, for one. That’s because scientists haven’t been able to produce a single approved plant-based vaccine in over a decade of research. But if GreenVax succeeds, the company could save lives in the case of a pandemic–while it would take the entire planet’s labs 12 months to make three billion doses of H1N1 vaccine using the egg approach, GreenVax claims that its single facility in Texas could scale up to generate 100 million vaccines each month.

Altria Group Inc. said Thursday that its fourth quarter earnings rose 7% even as cigarette volumes continued to shrivel, and the tobacco titan said the business outlook for 2010 remains challenging.
Altria (MO 19.61, +0.24, +1.24%) earned $725 million, or 35 cents a share, in the quarter
ended , from $679 million, or 33 cents a share, a year earlier.
Revenue at the Richmond, Va.-based maker of Marlboro cigarettes rose 29% to $6.01 billion from $4.65 billion.
On an adjusted basis, the company said it would have earned 39 cents a share in the latest quarter.
The average estimate of analysts polled by FactSet Research had been for the company to earn 40 cents a share on revenue of $4.17 billion.
The company said the business environment for 2010 is likely to remain challenging, as adult consumers remain under economic pressure and face high unemployment.
Its tobacco operating companies also continue to see competitive promotional activity. It also expects that continuing state budget issues may lead to excise tax increase proposals in many states in 2010.
Altria forecast that its 2010 profit to be $1.78 to $1.82 a share, including estimated charges of 7 cents a share related to exit, integration and implementation costs, UST-acquisition related costs and SABMiller (UK:SAB 1,666, -32.00, -1.88%) special items.
Excluding items, profit is forecast to be $1.85 to $1.89 a share.
Altria spun off Philip Morris International (PM 45.70, +0.17, +0.37%) at the end of March
2008 in a move designed to separate the fast-growing overseas cigarette business from a U.S. unit hobbled by litigation worries, huge payments to states and seemingly inexorable year-on-year volume declines.
About a year ago, it closed on the acquisition of smokeless tobacco and wine maker UST.
During the period, Philip Morris USA’s domestic cigarette shipment was down 11.4% while its flagship Marlboro brand’s retail share was down 0.4 percentage point to 41.7%.
On the brighter side, smokeless tobacco brands Copenhagen and Skoal’s combined volume rose 7.8% versus the prior-year period, driven by the successful launch of Copenhagen Long Cut Wintergreen
“Marlboro displayed resiliency in an intensely competitive promotional environment, and we are also pleased with the strong retail share and volume growth of Copenhagen in the fourth quarter of 2009,” said Michael Szymanczyk, chief executive, in the earnings report.

A SOUTH Yorkshire mum kicked her 20-a-day habit with the help of a scheme encouraging people to keep their homes and cars smoke-free.
Nicole Shackley from Mexborough signed up to the Smokefree Homes initiative and believes it is helping her stay focused and motivated to keep away from the cigs.

The voluntary scheme is run by NHS Rotherham, South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue, Rotherham 2010 and Voluntary Action Rotherham and aims to raise awareness of the hazards of tobacco smoke in people’s homes and cars.

Nicole, aged 26, a smoker for nine years, signed up to protect her son Joe from smoke. She said: “I was decorating the house one day and noticed how stained the ceilings were from the tobacco smoke, so thought if that’s what it’s doing in my home, what’s it doing inside our bodies?”

Since making the change she is enjoying a cleaner and fresher house, and is spending the money she saves on fresh ingredients and cook books.

She added: “Having a smoke-free home has really helped me to stop smoking and stay quit.”
